ABOUT THE MAKER
Echeri Ceramics is the product of Husband & Wife team Alejandra and Luis Calderon, who have been crafting one-of-a-kind, handmade ceramics out of their Sacramento, California studio since 2017.
In the Purepecha language of their ancestors in the state of Michoacan, Mexico, Echeri literally means “earth” or “dirt”. Alejandra and Luis aim to create a personal narrative through the earth and continue their personal and community narrative. Ceramics, to them, is a communication of community, a means to generate conversation and connect with others.
In terms of process, the two address ceramics as a layered emotional experience, a dialogue with clay in expectation versus reality, a gentle push and pull. Their work is inspired by a variety of experiences, from music, to poetry, to trips, culture and arguments. The pair find beauty and meaning through the process of creating and finishing their ceramic works, which strike a perfect balance between form and function.
