With fronds that can extend to three to four feet long, the Nephrolepis biserrata “Macho Fern” is a graceful, trailing relative of the Boston Fern and Kimberly Queen. Native to Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, this bold beauty is an easy-care epiphyte, so long as you can mimic the warm temps and humid climates of its natural surroundings.
The mature Macho can grow to nearly six feet wide, so you’ll need to give this big guy room to grow. We find them ideal for hanging baskets and trailing from high-up spaces, like atop a bookshelf. For those with a little extra corner space, they can be nested like a sculpture in a standing urn for an extra dose of drama!
Light: A bright, indirect spot a few feet from a bright window is best for this light-loving fern variety. Be careful not to place in hot direct sun, however, to avoid scorching its fronds.
Water: Ferns love water, but like most plants, do not like to sit in soggy soil. Water your fern once the surface of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch, and make sure you give it a pot with a drainage hole.
Humidity: Ferns also thrive in a humid environment and will appreciate it if you add a humidifier or pebble tray to your plant care routine.
